**Step #5:  Butterfly Breathing**
To teach butterfly breathing, have the swimmer start in the Butterfly Float position.

As soon as she starts her pull, place your hands along the side of her head and gently guide her head forward and up a gradual ramp.

Her chin is on the surface of the water so she can get a breath.

She’s looking forward and angled down and looking at the water a few inches away from her face.

Keep the head movement to a minimum.  Keep the head in line with the body.

Next, she tries it on her own and without any body motion, just the pull and breathing.

If you’re using a mirror, she sees her face back in the water before her arms land…like this.

Next she tries it with the full stroke…on her second arm stroke, and continues breathing every other stroke.  I also have her breathe every stroke to see how she looks.
